A research study led by Professor Kim Hyeon-ji’s team at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH)’s Obstetrics and Gynecology department, titled “Effects of microplastics on the gestation of pregnant women and fetuses," has been selected for the 2024 National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF)’s Young Researcher Program, which supports young researchers in science and engineering to boost research capabilities and national basic research initiatives.

It is known that microplastics can enter expectant mothers' bodies and travel through the bloodstream to the placenta, significantly affecting fetal development. While related studies exist, large-scale prospective cohort studies to understand the correlation between gestational complications and fetal harm are still in the early stages.

Professor Kim’s study aims to investigate the impact of microplastics on fetal development by analyzing samples from pregnant women, newborns, and fetuses over a five-year period starting this year.

The team plans to establish a standardized method for analyzing biological samples in collaboration with Jung Jae-hak, a research director specializing in microplastics analysis at the Korea Institute of Analytical Science (KIAST).

"This large-scale prospective cohort study will provide crucial insights into the relationship between microplastics and perinatal complications," said Professor Kim. "Through this research, we aim to scientifically clarify the potential impact of microplastics and develop strategies to prevent and manage pregnancy complications."
